Ajax and Liverpool met for the first time since December 1966 when they played each other in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening (start time 20:00).
Curtis Jones started in Liverpool’s midfield, forced to place Fabinho in central defense in the absence of Virgil van Dyck and Joel Matip.
Jürgen Klopp’s side are eyeing a third Champions League final in four seasons when they start their campaign in the Dutch capital.
As for Amsterdammers, there is a serene faith in the reproduction of their historic semi-final run two years ago; Liverpool were preparing for the final before drama broke out against Johan Cruyff Arena’s spurs.
This is a very different team from Ajax, but as Klopp and others have repeated, their philosophy remains unchanged. Could the guys in Eric Ten Hague create more seismic shocks or will the Reds’ irresistible attack at night prove too much?
