No NPL rivalry runs deeper than Lumbini against Sudurpaschim. Four meetings have produced two wins each, one final, and a Season 3 opener that flipped the story — Sudurpaschim won the first two meetings, Lumbini won the last two, including the Season 2 final and the Season 3 opener. Sudurpaschim remain the league’s winningest side with 14 wins from 18 matches, yet they have never lifted the trophy, while Lumbini arrive as defending champions. Their round-robin meeting for this season is already done, so a fifth meeting can only come in the playoffs.

Four meetings, two wins each

Sudurpaschim struck first in the rivalry, winning the Season 1 meeting by 45 runs on 7 December 2024, posting 187 for 4 against Lumbini’s 142 for 9. Sudurpaschim struck again in the Season 2 league meeting on 27 November 2025, chasing 143 with seven wickets in hand after bowling Lumbini out for 143. Two meetings, two Sudurpaschim wins, and a rivalry that looked one-sided.

Lumbini answered in the matches that mattered most. The Season 2 final on 13 December 2025 saw Sudurpaschim bowled out for 85, and Lumbini chased 86 for 4 to win by six wickets and lift the title. The Season 3 opener on 26 October 2026 repeated the pattern: Sudurpaschim, sent in after losing the toss, were bowled out for 87 in 17.2 overs, and Lumbini chased 88 for 3 in just 9.5 overs to win by seven wickets. Two meetings, two Lumbini wins — and the head to head stands level at two each.

Two finals, two heartbreaks for Sudurpaschim

Sudurpaschim’s side of the rivalry is defined by finals lost. They reached the Season 1 final and lost to Janakpur by five wickets, then reached the Season 2 final and lost to Lumbini by six wickets after collapsing to 85. No other franchise has reached two NPL finals, and no other franchise has lost two — a record that makes Sudurpaschim both the league’s most consistent side and its most frustrated one.

Lumbini’s side is defined by knockout nerve. Their Season 2 title run went past Sudurpaschim in the final, after losing the league meeting to them weeks earlier, and captain Rohit Paudel’s side carried that nerve into Season 3, where Sher Malla’s three for 11 and Kishor Mahato’s four for 22 dismantled Sudurpaschim in the opener. Paudel himself took one for 10 and finished unbeaten on five in that chase, while D’Arcy Short’s 40 off 18 balls and Aasif Sheikh’s 32 set up the nine-and-a-half-over finish.

How Match 1 changed the rivalry

Match 1 mattered beyond its two points because it broke Sudurpaschim’s hold on the fixture. Before the opener, Sudurpaschim had won both previous meetings, and their 14 wins from 18 matches marked them as the league’s benchmark side. Lumbini’s seven-wicket win, sealed with 61 balls to spare, showed the champions defending their title from the first night, and left Sudurpaschim with a familiar problem: a batting collapse on a big occasion, after their 85 in the Season 2 final.

Dipendra Singh Airee’s Sudurpaschim answered in their next match, beating Pokhara by six wickets behind Airee’s own unbeaten 51, so the opener did not derail their season. After six matches, though, the table still tells the rivalry’s story: Lumbini sit second, unbeaten with the league’s best net run rate, while Sudurpaschim sit fifth at one win and one loss. Airee’s 78 runs and two wickets lead his side’s resistance, but the head to head now belongs, on recent form, to Lumbini.

Only the playoffs can bring a rematch

Round-robin rules mean Lumbini and Sudurpaschim will not meet again in the league stage — their Season 3 fixture is done, settled in Lumbini’s favour on the opening night. A fifth meeting needs both sides in the top four when the league stage ends on 15 November, with the playoffs running from 17 November to the final on 21 November, all at TU Ground.

Both sides have the schedule to get there. Lumbini’s remaining league matches include Chitwan on Saturday, while Sudurpaschim face Biratnagar on Saturday evening in a game both sides need. If the two rivals meet again in the final, Sudurpaschim will carry the weight of two final defeats into it.
