It all boils down to who can hold the nerve when Zimbabwe take on Afghanistan in the Group B clash on Saturday (March 11) – a clash that will determine which team will qualify for the main round of the World Twenty20, 2016. Both teams have registered two wins in as many games and the equation is as straightforward as it gets – win and get through to the next round.
Despite the relatively comfortable victories in their first two matches, Zimbabwe have some issues to address, especially with the bat. While Vusi Sibanda’s mature knock helped Zimbabwe recover from a collapse against Hong Kong, Sean Williams had to bail the team out of trouble after Zimbabwe’s top-order failed to get going again.
There have been useful contributions from the lower-order batsmen, but Zimbabwe will be hoping for Hamilton Masakadza and Richmond Mutumbami, who have not quite made a mark yet, to pull up their socks.
The bowling department has been disciplined, with the pacers picking up the bulk of the wickets, and Zimbabwe will be banking on them to continue the good job.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan, with their positive brand of cricket in their matches so far, have indicated that they are here to go places and not just fill up spots in the tournament.
If Mohammad Shahzad’s aggression is complemented by skipper Asghar Stanikzai’s ability to hold one end up, Noor Ali Zadran can guide the middle order in the presence of Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi and Shafiqullah, batsmen who can pack quite a punch.
