Iran head into their final game in Group F still in contention to advance to the second round for the first time in team history. To do so, they’ll need to beat Bosnia-Herezegovina – who have lost their first two matches in their first-ever World Cup – and also get a little help from group frontrunner Argentina.
While Bosnia’s defeat at the hands of Nigeria last Sunday meant the end of their campaign, Iran get a last chance at qualifying to the knockout stages, but for that a win on Wednesday is a must.
Following a disappointing goalless draw against Nigeria, Iran managed to impress in their second game against mighty Argentina. The Albiceleste was struggeling against disciplined defensive work, and was even tested by the Iranian frontline a few times, needing the help of goalkeeper Romero to remain in the game. Only a 93rd minute solo effort by Leo Messi separated Carlos Quieroz’s side from achieving a landmark result.
Bosnia went down to Nigeria last Sunday but was very unlucky to be affected by several controversial referee calls during the game. A first half Dzeko goal was erroneously called off for alleged offside, and the winning goal was scored after a clear Nigeria foul just outside the box was overlooked, allowing for the ball to reach Peter Odemwingie. Captain Vincent Enyeama had a brilliant display in the second half and kept the Super Eagles in contention and eliminated the Bosnians.
Iran will have to play a bit more openly, as they need to score goals should they wish to overtake Nigeria in the table.
Overall, Bosnia has much more quality than their opponents, but have nothing left to play for except their pride. However, with the Iranian defence allowing more space, Dzeko and Ibisevic could have a much easier time scoring than did the front lines of Argentina and Nigeria.
