ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will celebrate Eid ul Fitr on Monday, March 31, 2025, after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal crescent on Sunday evening. The announcement marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and heralds festivities across the nation.
Moon Sighting Declared After Nationwide Verification
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, convened on the rooftop of Islamabad’s Kohsar Block to review testimonies from zonal committees in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar. Despite partial cloud cover in some regions, multiple credible sightings of the Shawwal moon were reported from cities including:
- Lahore
- Bahawalpur
- Islamabad
- Sheikhupura
- Kasur
“After thorough verification and consultation with scholars, meteorologists, and regional committees, we unanimously declare that 1st Shawwal 1446 AH will fall on March 31, 2025,” stated Maulana Azad.
The decision aligns with earlier predictions by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), which projected Ramadan to begin on March 2, 2025, and Eid ul Fitr on March 31. Suparco’s astronomical calculations, combined with traditional moon-sighting methods, ensured a cohesive verdict this year.
Religious scholars, including representatives from major seminaries, and officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs attended the meeting to authenticate the testimonies. Meteorological experts also provided real-time weather updates to assess visibility conditions.
Nationwide Preparations Underway
While Pakistan’s Eid date is now confirmed, differences with other Muslim-majority nations may persist due to divergent moon-sighting methodologies. For instance:
- Saudi Arabia and Gulf states often rely on the Umm al-Qura calendar, which may declare Eid a day earlier.
- South Asian neighbors like India and Bangladesh could follow Pakistan’s announcement or their own sightings.
