Two huge explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, wounding dozens of people, shaking buildings and sending huge plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.
Lebanese media carried images of people trapped under rubble, some bloodied, after the massive explosions, the cause of which was not immediately known.
A security source confirmed that two explosions shook the port area of the city, Lebanon’s largest urban area, leaving dozens wounded.

Injured people were walking in the street, while outside the Clemenceau Medical Centre, dozens of wounded people, many covered in blood, were rushing to be admitted to the center including children.
The powerful blast on Tuesday shook several parts of Beirut, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.
Initial reports suggested the explosion took place in the capital’s port area containing warehouses. Ambulances were seen heading towards the scene in central Beirut.

The cause of the blast remained unknown.
Hamad Hassan, Lebanon’s health minister, said hundreds were wounded in the explosion.
The blast wave from the explosion caused extensive damage to buildings, shattering windows within a large radius of the blast site.
“Buildings are shaking,” tweeted one resident, while another wrote: “An enormous, deafening explosion just engulfed Beirut. Heard it from miles away”.
Destroyed cars had been abandoned in the street with their airbags inflated.
“I was kilometers away; the glass broke everywhere around me,” said Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut.
“The explosion was felt across the city,” she added. “There is chaos in the streets.”
