Manchester City vs Southampton Match Preview
Southampton may have been relieved to lose only 3-1, rather than 9-0, in their Carabao Cup meeting with Manchester City this week – and more of the same could be in store on Saturday.
Saints were completely humiliated when they suffered the joint heaviest ever Premier League defeat, and the biggest at home, in being trounced 9-0 by Leicester City last Friday.
Following such a result, travelling to face free-scoring Manchester City twice in five days was the last thing Southampton would have wanted, and they must have been glad that Pep Guardiola fielded a largely second-string side that eased into the quarter-finals by a 3-1 scoreline.
However, Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne will surely be back this time and that spells trouble for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, who are now in the relegation zone and there must be fears that they will be involved in the dogfight for the remainder of the season.
For City, of course, the target will be three points that would ensure they stay no more than six behind leaders Liverpool, who are away to Aston Villa in a simultaneous contest.
Although the City team has more potential than Southampton’s to be improved from the line-ups that played on Tuesday, there should also be a determination from the visitors not to be embarrassed like they were against Leicester and we think they can again keep their margin of defeat at two goals.
