Morocco advanced to this round after winning Group C in the last stage, with two wins and a draw in the round. The team defeated Ghana 1-0, then Comoros 2-0 before drawing Gabon 2-2 in their last game. Ligue 1 Angers midfielder Sofiane Boufal scored twice in the round, while PSG’s Achraf Hakimi scored in the team’s match against Gabon.
Morocco have had success in the past but have only made one quarter-final appearance since their silver medal in 2004.
Malawi advanced after finishing third in Group B, with a win, a loss and a draw. That victory was 2-1 over Zimbabwe, with Gabadinho Mhango, who plays professionally in South Africa for Orlando Pirates, scoring both goals in the victory.
This is only Malawi’s third all-time appearance at this tournament, with exits from the group stage in 1984 and 2010. They have already had their best performance and will be looking to build on that on Tuesday.
