Liverpool have won all of their home matches since February 27 – but the Carabao Cup may just give Arsenal an opportunity to end that sequence at 14 straight victories.
Bayern Munich were the last visiting team to avoid defeat at Anfield, although Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham threatened to scupper that statistic when they took a first-minute lead on Sunday before eventually succumbing 2-1 to a Mo Salah penalty 15 minutes from the end.
While Liverpool were coming from behind to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, Arsenal were squandering a 2-0.
Advantage at home to Crystal Palace to draw 2-2 in a match notable for a VAR-disallowed ‘winner’ for the Gunners and the petulant reaction of their captain Granit Xhaka to the crowd’s pleasure at his substitution.
But while Arsenal have a poor recent record at Anfield, especially defensively (see stats above) the League Cup can be a great leveller. Jurgen Klopp’s side were knocked out last season on their own pitch by Chelsea.
In the previous round last month, it was Klopp that fielded a comparatively more weakened line-up than Unai Emery who is likely to send his Europa League line-up to Merseyside,
whereas it would be no surprise if Liverpool again named some of the kids who won 4-0 at MK Dons.
This competition is likely to be of more importance to Arsenal, given they are not in contention for the Premier League or Champions League, unlike their opponents, and there may just be the potential for an upset here.
