There’s still over three years and two months until the start of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, but the road to Doha is about to start for most of Asia.
Six teams have already been eliminated in the first round of World Cup qualification, but the rest of Asia will start the second round this September international break.
n Group B, Australia are in a bullish mood with head coach Graham Arnold claiming his side will become the “greatest ever” Socceroos side under his leadership.
His new-look side contains 12 players with 10 caps or fewer, and will face a tough test from Jordan who beat Australia 1-0 in the Asian Cup earlier this year.
First up for the Socceroos though is a trip to Kuwait who didn’t complete the second round last time around as they were suspended by FIFA.
Yemen, Afghanistan, and (for now) Syria will have to play their home games in neutral countries for security reasons.
But Iraq will be hosting games in this qualification cycle after FIFA declared Basra safe enough for games to take place. One of those games will be against neighbors Iran.
While Iran impressed in the World Cup and are currently the highest ranked side in Asia, a lot of their recent success can be attributed to former manager Carlos Queiroz, who left for Colombia earlier this year.
Former Belgium boss Marc Wilmots will be under pressure to match Queiroz’s achievements. He started off well with a 5-0 win at home to Syria and a draw away to South Korea.
