November is incredibly early to be talking about a title decider, but Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table will be nine points if they can beat Manchester City on Sunday.
That means victory for the Reds would make them long odds-on favourites to end their 30-year wait to become champions of England once more.
This is obviously a huge fixture in the race for the crown and the bookmakers are struggling to separate the teams in the match result market, which is actually a big compliment to City considering Liverpool have a 100% record at home in the Premier League since the start of February.
But even though City have a poor recent CV at Anfield, with their last win there in any competition coming in May 2003, this could be the time to back them to shake that monkey off their back.
One reason is that Liverpool are struggling to keep clean sheets, as the stats above outline. They do not always play their first-choice line-up, as they will this weekend, but in the last six weeks Jurgen Klopp’s team have conceded three goals at home to Red Bull Salzburg, five against Arsenal and, on Tuesday, failed to keep out a mediocre Genk side.
City’s fearsome attack will surely be ultra-confident of causing the Liverpool rearguard plenty of problems – especially as they have won 14 of their last 15 domestic away games.
Arguably, Liverpool have been riding their luck of late. In their last 12 matches, the only teams they have beaten by more than one goal are MK Dons and Genk – and even champions cannot keep doing that indefinitely.
Admittedly it would put a different complexion on things if City goalkeeper Ederson was ruled out by the injury he suffered in midweek. But if the Brazilian is passed fit to play, his side’s greater creativity in midfield may just enable them to grind out a priceless victory.
