Rain Washes Out Lumbini vs Chitwan Match 7, Points Shared

Saturday’s first match ended before it began. Persistent rain left TU Ground waterlogged, officials called off Lumbini against Chitwan without a toss and without a ball bowled, and both sides took one point each from a fixture that never started. Both teams had won their opening matches, and both unbeaten records survive — not through cricket, but through weather.

No toss, no play

Rain has fallen in Kathmandu since Thursday night, and Saturday morning offered no relief. TU Ground stayed under covers through the morning, the toss was officially delayed, and drizzle kept falling while the outfield stayed waterlogged. Officials waited for conditions to improve, but the ground never became fit for play, and the match was abandoned without a single ball bowled.

Cricket Association of Nepal secretary Paras Khadka confirmed the decision, saying the ground was not fit for play after persistent showers left conditions unplayable. With no reserve days in the tournament schedule, there was no fallback date to move the game to — the fixture simply stands as abandoned, and the points are shared.

Saturday was supposed to be a double-header, with defending champions Lumbini meeting Chitwan in the afternoon game. Both sides arrived unbeaten, Lumbini having beaten Sudurpaschim by seven wickets in the opener and Chitwan having beaten Biratnagar by eight runs in Match 2. Neither side got the chance to extend that winning start, and neither side suffered a first defeat either.

Points shared, table moves

Abandoned league matches award one point to each side, and the shared point moves both teams up the table. Lumbini climb to second place with three points, from one win and one abandoned game, while Chitwan climb to third with an equal tally of three points. Karnali stay top with four points from two wins, and the net run rates of both abandoned sides stay exactly where they were (Lumbini at plus 4.599, Chitwan at plus 0.400) because no ball was bowled to change them.

For Lumbini, the shared point keeps their title defence on track without spending any of their remaining fixtures. Rohit Paudel’s side still have five league matches left after Saturday, and their unbeaten record stays intact. For Chitwan, the point is equally welcome: Kushal Malla’s side stay unbeaten too, with six league matches still to play, and their campaign now resumes with the same three points they would have carried from a win plus a washout in any order.

Below them, the table stays as it was after six matches. Janakpur and Sudurpaschim sit on two points each, while Biratnagar, Kathmandu and Pokhara are still waiting for their first points of the season. Every abandoned point handed out now tightens the race for the top four, because a shared point is worth half a win to two teams at once.

Evening match in doubt

Saturday’s second match faces the same threat. Sudurpaschim against Biratnagar is scheduled for 5:00 PM NST at the same ground, and early reports called that fixture unlikely to go ahead as well. Officials set a cut-off time of 7:41 PM NST for the evening game, and the cricket association has said even a five-over-a-side match will be organised if the rain stops in time.

If the rain continues, Sunday’s fixtures face the same threat, and the tournament’s run of washouts could stretch further into the week. For now, both Saturday teams wait: Lumbini and Chitwan leave Kirtipur with a point each and no cricket played, while Sudurpaschim and Biratnagar wait on the evening sky.

Why was Lumbini vs Chitwan Match 7 abandoned?

Persistent rain since Thursday night left TU Ground waterlogged, and officials called the match off without a toss after the ground never became fit for play. No ball was bowled.

Who got points from the abandoned match?

One point each. Abandoned league matches award a point to both sides, and there are no reserve days in the schedule, so the fixture will not be replayed.

Where do Lumbini and Chitwan stand after the washout?

Lumbini sit second with three points and Chitwan third with three points, both unbeaten. Karnali stay top with four points from two wins.

What about the evening match on Saturday?

Sudurpaschim against Biratnagar is scheduled for 5:00 PM NST at the same ground, with a cut-off time of 7:41 PM NST. Officials have said even a five-over-a-side match will be organised if the rain stops in time.
