Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways on Wednesday night when they host Rochdale at Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side fell to a dismal defeat against West Ham at the weekend and will now be looking to get back on track when they host their local League One rivals.
United won the only ever previous meeting with Rochdale, but were knocked out of the League Cup at the first attempt last season when they lost against Derby.
In terms of early team news, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba are back in the provisional squad for the match however Diogo Dalot and Angel Gomes appear to be both missing. Youngster Brandon Williams is set to make a match day squad for the first-time.
Rochdale’s players are currently out on the Old Trafford pitch getting acquainted with their surroundings. You’ve got to imagine there’s going to be a few nerves amongst that squad tonight and how they deal with playing on such a grand stage will have an influence on proceedings. A fast start from United could prey on any nerves amongst the visitors.
Looking ahead to Arsenal, the provisional XI could be:
De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young, McTominay, Pogba, Fred, James, Greenwood, Martial. Maybe Shaw for Young, if he recovers. Young has been rested completely tonight, which possibly suggests Shaw won’t be ready for Monday.
The 4-2-3-1 has not particularly worked for United and is not worth sticking with. McTominay-Fred-Pogba has potential for the short-term.
