The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is working to convert computerized national ID cards into digital wallets.
NADRA chief Tariq Malik revealed this in a local newspaper interview, adding that the move was part of the PTI-led government’s vision for a digital Pakistan.
“To turn this vision into reality, we have launched the ‘Pak Identity’ mobile application as a key part of digital identification to facilitate national identity card applications through an online portal. The application helps to scan the documents required to process a person’s ID card using biometric fingerprints, facial recognition and smartphones, without going to the NADRA office or embassy,” Malik told Dawn Said
He added that since the launch of the app, 75,000 Pakistanis living abroad have updated their Nicop without any office.
Pakistan is the first country in the world to launch an application that enables the acquisition and verification of “contactless biometrics” using smartphone cameras.
“With successful tests on 75,000 Pakistanis abroad, NADRA will opt for the digital wallet,” he said.
He explained that the digital wallet would be revolutionary for the national identity ecosystem in Pakistan, adding that it would also help eliminate traditional physical identification.
The NADRA chief said the technology would facilitate contactless banking and make doing business in the country easier.
