Bangladesh defeated New Zealand in the semifinal of the U-19 World Cup to set up a final showdown against defending champions India.
India will be meeting neighbours Bangladesh in the final of the 2020 U-19 World Cup, after the side defeated New Zealand in the second semifinal of the tournament on Thursday. Bangladesh defeated the Kiwis by 6 wickets to set up a final showdown against the defending champions.
India had earlier defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 10 wickets in the first semifinal of the tournament.
While India will be aiming for a record fifth title, Bangladesh will be making their maiden final appearance in the tournament’s history. India had defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the final of the previous edition of the U19 World Cup, when the side was led by Prithvi Shaw and coached by legendary former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid.
Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 6 wickets in the second semifinal on Thursday to book a place in the final on Sunday vs defending champions India. New Zealand and Bangladesh were locking horns in the second semi-final match of ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup today at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. New Zealand had scored 211/8 in their 50 overs, batting first. Bangladesh made early inroads with regular wickets, and New Zealand were struggling to get their innings going in the initial stages after being sent in to bat first. A 67-run partnership between Nicholas Lidstone and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall (75*) rescued the innings somewhat. Beckham Wheeler-Greenall carried on from there, guiding his team to a fighting total with a strong finish.
In response, Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored a sensational ton to guide Bangladesh home. His 100 off 127 balls included 13 fours. Bangladesh eventually chased down the target with 35 deliveries still remaining in the contest.
India sealed the final berth with a commanding ten-wicket win over Pakistan U19s in the first Super-League semi-final.
