Kings find life
Biratnagar started the season with two defeats that still showed fight. Chitwan beat the Kings by eight runs in Match 2, defending 157 for three against Biratnagar’s 149 all out in 19.3 overs, and Karnali beat them by four wickets in Match 6 after Biratnagar had posted 186 for seven. Lokesh Bam scored 87 off 52 balls in that Karnali game, with nine sixes, and the total of 186 for seven would have won most games at Kirtipur. Angelo Mathews scored 31 off 23 balls in the same game and took three wickets for 25 runs, and Biratnagar left Match 6 with a batting display to build on even in defeat.
Saturday changed the mood. Match 8 against Sudurpaschim was reduced to five overs per side after rain, and Biratnagar posted 105 for two before holding Sudurpaschim to 70 for three to win by 35 runs. Shehan Jayasuriya scored 39 off 11 balls in that short game, and the win opened Biratnagar’s account after two defeats. After nine matches, the Kings sit fifth with two points and a net run rate of plus 0.544, the best among the sides on two points. Sandeep Lamichhane captains the side with an economy rate of 7.73 in Season 3, and his bowling at Kirtipur will matter against a Janakpur batting line up that has found form. A second straight win on Tuesday would take Biratnagar to four points and right into the playoff race, while a defeat would keep them on two points from four matches.
Bolts on a roll
Janakpur started with a defeat and have won twice since. Karnali beat the Bolts by 19 runs in Match 3 after Janakpur were bowled out for 113 in 19.3 overs, and Janakpur answered with an eight wicket win over Kathmandu in Match 5, chasing 116 for two in 17.2 overs after Kathmandu had posted 115 all out. Moeen Ali scored 58 not out off 51 balls in that chase, and Rahul Yadav took four wickets for 31 runs and was named Player of the Match. Sunday brought a second straight win, as Janakpur defended 147 for seven against Pokhara in Match 9 and won by nine runs, with Pokhara closing on 138 for nine.
Trit Raj Das scored 61 off 55 balls in the Pokhara win and was named Player of the Match, and Moeen took three wickets for 13 runs in four overs to break the chase. Rahul has six wickets from three matches in Season 3, and Janakpur bowling has now defended a total and chased one in the space of two games. After nine matches, the Bolts sit second with four points and a net run rate of plus 0.141, behind Karnali only on net run rate among the sides on four points. Harmeet Singh captains the side with Shivnarine Chanderpaul as head coach, and a third straight win on Tuesday would take Janakpur to six points and keep them firmly in the top two.
What to watch
Bam against Janakpur bowling is the match inside the match. Bam scored 87 off 52 balls with nine sixes against Karnali, and his power at the top of the order can take a game away in a few overs. Janakpur bowling answered that kind of threat against Pokhara, with Moeen taking three wickets for 13 runs and Rahul taking wickets through the season, and the early overs on Tuesday should show which side holds the advantage.
Moeen with bat and ball is the other thread. Moeen scored 58 not out off 51 balls against Kathmandu and took three wickets for 13 runs against Pokhara, and Biratnagar will need a plan for both versions of him. Sandeep captains Biratnagar and bowls with an economy rate of 7.73, and his contest with Das, who scored 61 off 55 balls on Sunday, could decide the middle overs. Points sharpen everything: Biratnagar win would level the Kings with Janakpur on four points, while Janakpur win would open a four point gap between the sides.
