Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 champions Karachi Kings have shown poor performance in the current tournament which was unexpected especially after the appointment of a new skipper.
Babar Azam, last year at the T20 World Cup, led the green shirts to a historic victory over arch-rivals India, has now been named the new Kings captain in place of Imad Wasim.
Despite the new captain, the Kings weren’t up to the task in the current first leg of the tournament.
They lost by seven wickets to Multan Sultan, six wickets to Lahore Qalandars and eight wickets to Quetta Gladiators, and it looks like their losing streak will continue.
These are some of the reasons why it does not work well;
Team dependency on higher order
The Kings appear to be relying heavily on the top of the order, Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam, to score runs as none of the batsmen behind them appear to be up to snuff.
Babar tries to add points on the scoreboard
The captain tries to maintain his “brand identity” as the one who scores points for the team when they need them most, as he does in international cricket.
As a result, the 27-year-old isn’t scoring on the power play, when he should be hitting hard, and prefers to play a longer inning than the other hitters.
Absence of Mohammad Amir
The former pacemaker is among the best wicket takers in the tournament. But it is possible that he will not be able to participate in the games due to his injury a few hours after the first match.
