Sassa pays SRD grants to around 8 million people each month. To be one of them, you need to apply and part of that is checking your Sassa status. This guide will walk you through a simple process to verify your status for the September 2024 payment cycle.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has millions of South Africans who depend on it every month. This is because Sassa is responsible for paying social grants, such as the Sassa R370 grant.
September is the month in which grant recipients benefit from a larger SRD grant payment, R370.
To benefit from the Social Relief of Needs (SRD) grant, you must submit a Sassa application. To keep track of this, you will need to constantly check your Sassa status, as knowing the status of your Sassa application allows you to stay informed and proactive.
How to Check Your Sassa Grant Status
There are two user-friendly options for checking your Sassa grant status: Online and using WhatsApp.
Online Sassa R370 Grant Status Check
- Head to the official Sassa SRD website.
- Find the “Application Status” section.
- Enter your South African ID number and the phone number you used when applying.
- Click “Check Status.” You might receive a one-time security PIN (OTP) via SMS.
- Enter it to view your status.
Sassa Status Check Via Whatsapp
- Save the SASSA WhatsApp number (082 046 8553) to your contacts.
- Open WhatsApp and send a message to SASSA saying “Status” followed by your ID number
- SASSA will reply with your application details, including any payment dates (if applicable) and your eligibility status.
Before starting the Sassa status check, make sure you have your South African ID number and the phone number you used during your application readily available.
SRD Grant Increase
In March 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the SRD allowance payment would be increased from R350 to R370. This represents an increase of 5.7% for the grant.
Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, announced the grant increase of R20 in State Notification No. R. 3210 of 29 March 2023 confirmed.
The SRD allowance increase came into effect on 2 September.
